Secret Interviews for the WP

Lauren's Uncle John O'Connor born 1952 (Phone call)
1. What was your position on the Vietnam War?
JO: I was only three when it started but around the 60's and 70's I was very against it.  When I was a kid, my father, your grandfather, was in WWII and I took most of my cues from him and he was against the war.  By the time the war ended, I was, oh, probably 23.  It was a difficult time and watching those boys, killing and dying for a reason that most of us weren't aware of was bizarre and we didn't like it.

2. Are you more liberal or conservative?  Have your views changed since this era?
JO: Definitely much more conservative.  I've grown up in a very Republican family and my opinions have not changed too much, at least not swaying towards the liberal side that much.  But they have changed as the times change.

3. Do you think Ford should have pardoned Nixon?
JO: I think Nixon should have gotten more of a punishment for what he did.  A lot of those who worked for him got sent to jail or something like that.  I don't know.

4. What was your opinion of Nixon pre and post Watergate Scandal?
JO: Well I was just a kid when he was elected but he seems like a bit of a [censored].  I didn't like what happened at Watergate. That was a [jerk] move.

5. What was your reaction to Kennedy being assassinated?
JO: Well I was shocked.  I didn't see it coming.  No one could have.  And they have it recorded too.
LO: I know, we saw it in class.
JO: Oh!  What did you think.
LO: … Well it was horrible?

Lauren's new neighbor Fay (unknown last name) born 1938 (A very awkward dinner party)

1. What was your position on the Vietnam War?
F: Well I was for it, at first.  A lot of people were.  But once we got to see what it was really like, you know, it was the first televised war.  We weren't really used to that.  The public had never had just an up close and personal view of a war like that.  What were we supposed to think?  People don't like war.  They never have, they never will.  But sometimes it's necessary.  This war, however, I think was exceedingly unnecessary.

2. Are you more liberal or conservative?  Have your views changed since this era?
F: Conservative.  My views have swayed here and there but mostly conservative.

3. Do you think Ford should have pardoned Nixon?
F: Well I certainly understand why he did it but I think it was a little soon to go handing out pardons.

4. What was your opinion of Nixon pre and post Watergate Scandal?
F: Well I liked Nixon.  Voted for him too.  But after the Scandal, well everyone's opinion of him changed.  Didn't they show you that in class?  He plummeted.  And those tapes.  Yeah.  That was stupid of him.

5. What was your reaction to Kennedy being assassinated?
F: Oh that was tragic.  It really was.  I liked Kennedy a little bit too.  He was handsome.  And he had such promise.  But that whole family.  The brother too.  That was tragic too.

Lauren's new neighbor Dave (unknown last name) born 1936 (A very awkward dinner party)

1. What was your position on the Vietnam War?
D: Well, see, everyone had such optimistic views on the war at first.  We were winning and all that.  But then… then people got a view of what war is really like.  And they didn't take to it very well.  They turned against it.  Then the Vietnamese showed us we weren't really winning, now were we?
LO: No, we weren't.
D: And do you know what that was?
LO: Um… the Tet Offensive?
D: Good.  Now we weren't too thrilled with that so then everyone's view changed, mine included.  It's like football.  We all want our team to win.  I was all for the war but there really wasn't much reason behind it and it was a little disheartening having the press over there filming our men dying.

2. Are you more liberal or conservative?  Have your views changed since this era?
D: Well I was a liberal back in the day but I've grown conservative with my old age.

3. Do you think Ford should have pardoned Nixon?
D: Well no, I don't think he should have.

4. What was your opinion of Nixon pre and post Watergate Scandal?
D: Well, like I said, I was a liberal back then and I wasn't too keen on Nixon and hey, I was right.

5. What was your reaction to Kennedy being assassinated?
D: I didn't like it.  I mean, no one did, obviously.  I wasn't his biggest supporter, but no one deserves that.

Lauren's Grandmother Dawn DeLauren born [age withheld at her request (but she was born before that, I swear)] (Phone Call)
1. What was your position on the Vietnam War?
I was against.  Completely against it.

2. Are you more liberal or conservative?  Have your views changed since this era?
Oh I'm definitely a conservative.  Of course they haven't changed.

3. Do you think Ford should have pardoned Nixon?
DD: No!  He lied to us.  Would you have pardoned him?
LO: Well–
DD: –Of course not.  Why did Ford pardon him?  Because they were all buddy buddy and he didn't want to look bad but it just made him look worse!  We were all [upset] when he pardoned him.  He had no right!  Nixon screwed us over, they should have let him rot in jail but he just got a hand slap and sent off.

4. What was your opinion of Nixon pre and post Watergate Scandal?
DD: Oh I never liked Nixon.  Never.
LO: Not even a little–
DD: –Never.

5. What was your reaction to Kennedy being assassinated?
Well I was shocked, as was the rest of the nation.  What were we supposed to think?  He was assassinated.  Shot right in the head…
